Bandhavgarh National Park has a history of being called by several names; some call it “The Temple of the Tiger after the famous documentary by Harry Marshall. Some have christened Bandhavgarh as the “Fort of the Tiger”, because of the presence of the ancient Bandhavgarh Fort. This Fort is about two thousand years old. Lot of Kingdoms, like the Maghas, Vakatakas, and Chandel Kings have ruled this Fort over the past few centuries. They all left a deep footprint in the area, but somehow, they could not survive the changing times. But one King who was present before the humans laid their foot on this pristine land, and still roams free in his Kingdom…is the Tiger. He protects his Kingdom selflessly and fiercely. The whole geography of the area around them has changed, but one thing that has not is his determination to never give up against adversities. They have adapted well to the changing times.
Today when he walks in his Kingdom, the convoy of tourist vehicles follow his majesty. When he sits on the dirt tracks in the forest, everything around stands still except the camera shutter. When he sleeps in the bush or lazes in the water, they all patiently await to wake up to catch his glimpse. Such is his aura today in Bandhavgarh. His glory has only expanded over the centuries as we all now know his importance to the environment.
Bandhavgarh is one forest that makes all the visitors fall in love with it. A few years back some old inhabitants of Bandhavgarh, the Indian Gaur were shifted to Bandhavgarh from Kanha after they left Bandhavgarh for some mysterious reasons in 1997. Their numbers have grown significantly. Similarly, a herd of elephants came to Bandhavgarh from the neighboring state and have stayed put for over five years now. Following them, another smaller herd of their community came and made Bandhavgarh their new home. Some people who visited Bandhavgarh as tourists also fell in love with the place and have chosen to spend their lives here. Many visitors who come on tiger safaris in Bandhavgarh dedicated themselves to tiger conservation. Such is the charisma of the tigers of Bandhavgarh.
The only thing that is more beautiful than the tigresses of Bandhavgarh is their cubs. The tigresses so proudly show them off that one cannot help but fall in love with them, and come back again and again on tiger safaris in Bandhavgarh to see them grow.
